People are born either male or female, but they become men and women as a result of a culturally constructed belief system of gender codes that dictate what is acceptable and unacceptable in society for each gender. As unfair as it may seem, when a member of a certain gender is forced to conform to their gender code OR digresses from the appropriate code, there are consequences. However, the 21st century has seen a shift in gender roles due to multiple factors such as new family structures, education, media, and greater acceptance of LGBTQ and non-binary individuals. Many critics are arguing that this shift in contemporary society has made the impact of gender roles just as bad and in some cases even worse for men than for women. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
