Paper #3: Argumentative Essay
Purpose: to construct and defend an argument concerning one of the following topics:
That human morality is unfit for the future
That moral enhancement is necessary
That Brennan is correct about our specific implementation of democracy and the voting public.
That we should have compulsory voting.
The two topics can be interrelated, so if you want to address both, that’s totally fine. However, assume your argument is being read by a skeptical audience. The burden of proof is on you.
Your
argument must meaningfully include an assigned in-class source. It
should not regurgitate or simply be a summary/explanation of the
readings.
Grading Criteria: Your essay should demonstrate that you are able to do the following:
Have a clear purpose.
Clearly state the issue.
Present a clear thesis.
Support your thesis with well-paragraphed evidence and analysis.
Use effective, relevant quotes as evidence to support your thesis.
Demonstrate awareness of audience through appropriate academic tone.
Present focused, well-developed body paragraphs relevant to the thesis.
Quote, summarize, and paraphrase sources as necessary to supplement your ideas.
Use MLA format.
Articulate your ideas with clarity at the sentence and paragraph levels.
Write an essay free of errors in spelling, grammar, and mechanics.
Include a Works Cited page (this does not count toward the minimum length requirement).
Accurately reflect and portray the source(s) you use.
Integrate at least one assigned in-class source.
Follow the conventions of argumentative writing.

Length: 3-4 double-spaced pages
