OUTLINE You will include in the same document, a brief, simple outline. This can be a sentence or a concept/topic outline. It will be no more than one page. If you do not include a proper outline, I will deduct 10 points from your earned grade. I will deduct another 10 points if you do not write a proper thesis. Writing Assignment Purpose: to persuade This is a 5 paragraph essay but you may write more than 5 sentences in each paragraph on this essay. You cannot argue something that is a fact; a fact is already proved. You can argue for or against something that is not yet proved. Writing Prompt: Read any recent, last 12 months, Op-Ed (letter to the editor type) article in a national newspaper. You will take the opposite stand and support your case in a 750 to 1000 word essay. You will write it in 3rd person (“she, him,” etc. NOT “I, me, my…” and NEVER “you”). Why? We write scholarly essays in 3rd person. Also, DO NOT SAY, I think or I believe. Cite the OP-Ed at the top of your paper and again in the Works Cited page. As always, the last sentence of the first paragraph is the thesis and typed in bold print. You will find an Op-Ed from a newspaper. For that you need to go to a newspaper website. You will take a stand for or against the Op-Ed and then find 2 to 4 sources to support your argument. The thesis statement is your argument sentence. C ite the OP-Ed at the top of your paper and again in the Works Cited page. Those 2 to 4 sources may be found (best option) in our CTC online library or any actual news source online. DO NOT use .com sources unless they are well-known newspaper sites, for example, New York Times, Washington Post, and the like. Yes, the Op-Ed on which you based your essay will be one of the 2 – 4 sources you cite on the MLA Works Cited page at the end also, type the citation at the top of your essay so I know which citation is the actual Op-Ed.
