our critical response paper will be an insightful and inquisitive exploration of the primary readings for two different theorists. You may weave in lecture material into your paper, but you must focus most prominently on the texts in question. You do not need to, nor should you, include outside sources.
Please DO NOT summarize reading material – the critique should be a critical analysis of the material – relating it, if you wish, to lecture material. Therefore, you must synthesize the works of two theorists and critically focus on one major theme that runs through them.
The list of theorists you may choose from for each assignment is the following:
Adorno & Horkheimer, Foucault, Habermas.
In your analysis, you should examine the following points in this order:
(1) Identify and define a major theme than runs through the works of both theorists. For example, you may focus on the theme of “power” in Adorno & Horkheimer and compare it with “power” in Foucault.
(2) What is each theorist’s main argument in relation to this theme? You should not talk about the entire work of the theorist, but only the part or concept of her/his work that is most relevant to your theme of choice.
(3) Compare the two theorists’ arguments. You must discuss one similarity and one difference between the theorists. Here are a couple of questions that you may ask yourself in thinking about the comparison:
a. How do the different theorists relate and not relate to one another in how they understand this theme in general, or a specific aspect of the theme – how do they explain it differently and why?
b. Do the different positions compliment or conflict with one another? How and why do you think they conflict or compliment?

In organizing your paper please submit in the following standard format:
(1) A Title Page – your title should be succinct and to the point.
(2) An Introduction that briefly outlines, in one paragraph, your answers to the three points above.
(3) The Body, where you go ahead and make your argument step by step.
(4) The Conclusion, where you briefly recapitulate your argument in a small paragraph.
Please submit all of your critical papers electronically as a “.doc” or “.docx” file.
Paper must be in the range of 1000-1200 words (12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced). Your critique should include in-text citations and a list of references (please find the APA guide on Blackboard). Please be advised that grammar, spelling, and proper referencing according to the APA guide will be part of the evaluation.
