1)CBS: Economy has grown strongly, outlook uncertain!
The CBS has announced that the economy has grown strongly in recent years. The fact that the Netherlands made it to the World Ice hockey Championship in Japan was instrumental in catalysing this growth. Despite the fact that the team was eventually defeated by a strong Chinese team, the players can be proud of their achievement. “It has been great for the public of the Netherlands and for the wonderful sport of ice hockey” said Peter-Jan de Jager of the CBS.
Different marketing activities were introduced during the World Cup by a number of retailers. The “Pucky” for instance; an orange hairy puck with eyes was given to each customer who spent over 45 Euro on groceries. According to the spokesperson of this retailer, turnover increased by 22% in relation to the same period last year.
Ice hockey associations have also witnessed a dramatic increase in memberships. Dozens of new members who signed up for next year, love the sport. With the growth of new talent the Netherlands is likely to perform even better in the near future, perhaps 8 years from now the new generation of ice hockey players will lead the Dutch to victory in the World Ice Hockey Championship.. In short: a good year for the economy and for ice hockey!
However, the figures released by the CBS also come with some hefty warnings. . The economy is at its maximum, it is now struggling to cope with the dramatic increases in growth, and experts at the CBS predict that after this period of ‘boom’, the economy may begin to significantly retract. Some sectors are already reporting a sharp decline in sales, and it seems that consumer spending is also showing signs of abatement. Although the figures are not yet definitive, some economists intuitively sense a large decline based on some poor figures from the last two quarters. Although, the growth of the economy as a whole for the year was positive; the CBS concern is whether this can be sustained given it is already at full capacity.
2)World champion ice hockey in Japan is a unique event.
Japan –The national ice hockey team first game at Hokkaido got off to a surprising start. They played with a young team against Russia and took an early lead in the first period scoring two points against the Russians. In the second and third periods however, the Russians did much better. The famous Russian striker Boris ‘the butterfly’ Skatevoski gave an electrifying performance in the third period, easily gliding the puck past the keeper three times in the space of ten minutes. The final score was Russia 6 – national ice hockey team 3.
In the last decisive game the national ice hockey team stood against the notoriously aggressive Chinese team. The Chinese ice hockey players are known forplaying a rough game, with confrontations being a common occurrence at their matches. This game was no different, with neither team showing any weakness. Our forward player Gerald Mc Coy broke his jaw and the Chinese centre-forward Hai Chen was heavily injured and had to leave the ice. Despite a strong performance from the national ice hockey team, the Chinese seemed to be too good and won the game by 2-0.
Unfortunately this means, our team will not go to the next round. Nevertheless, many domestic supporters are satisfied about the team’s performance and the winning attitude of the players. The popularity of this ‘rugged’ sport has surged, particularly with younger generations.. Ice court operators have seen an increase in their sales and visitor numbers. It’s driven mainly by new visitors with their newly purchased hockey sticks and skates.
