Objective of this Paper: The objective of this assignment is to find a media portrayal of the material covered in class after Mini-paper 1 was submitted- so Cannabinoids, Opioids, Antidepressants, Mood Stabilizers, and Antipsychotic Drugs, or Hallucinogens are acceptable- Alcohol, Nicotine, Caffeine, Cocaine and Amphetamines are not acceptable and critique the media portrayal. This assignment will develop your awareness of the accuracy of media portrayals, develop your critical thinking skills, and apply the information you are learning in class. For your paper, use the headings listed below for each section of your paper. You are required to write this paper in your own words. Therefore, do not quote directly from any source at any point. The assignment is worth 30 points. You will find a media portrayal of a drug covered in class in text form (no videos). Your example may come from any authentic news source (e.g. CNN, NBC, Fox News, Huffington Post, New York Times, Glamour magazine, etc… -if using a television network source, you should use the write-up on their website rather than a video). However, the sources cannot be satirical (e.g. The Onion), Wikipedia, or personal blogs. The media portrayal must have been published during 2018 or later/more recently. Once you select your example, complete the following sections for your paper using the headings below: Summary: 7 points: Describe in your own words a brief summary of your media example. Be sure to include which topic it relates to from class, who is the target audience, who/what is their source for the information and/or their expert, if they provide any information to find further resources, and what are the major findings and/or conclusions. Accuracy: 8 points: Based on what you have learned in class (and from the book as applicable), describe the accuracy of the information. Provide at least two specific examples of accurate and inaccurate information. In the event you cannot provide two examples of both accuracy and inaccuracy, provide three examples in one of the categories and one in the other category for a total of four examples. Opinion: 7 points: Discuss your opinion of the material. Do you think it is helpful for the target audience? Do you think it encourages viewers (or readers) to get more information? Do you think it will help advance our understanding of the topic or result in misinformation for the viewer or reader? Take Home Message: 4 points: What was the most valuable thing you learned from this assignment? What do you think was the most valuable thing for the average viewer/reader?
