My class is Society, Politics, and Art from Renaissance Era Italy. The paper needs to be a historical compare and contrast research paper between Italian courtesans and Italian women who went into convents, with the historical context of the way women were regarded, and the centrality of marriage for patrician Italian society. My thesis is as follows: Although at opposite ends of society, both prostitution and convents allowed unmarried Italian women to create a life for themselves outside of the traditional domestic sphere, and afforded them levels of personal autonomy and freedoms in the framework of their lives. The paper needs to be framed around this thesis.
