M‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ore than sixty years after the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision that began the dismantlement of de jure racial segregation, the United States today is in many ways as segregated as it was before the era of the landmark civil rights reforms of the 1950s-60s. However, as we have learned in this class, in the last five decades, the compartmentalization of racialized bodies and spaces has gradually assumed new, less visible and knowable forms, leading many Americans to believe that we are now living in a “post-racial” democracy (particularly after the 2008 election of the nation’s first black president). Drawing from the readings we’ve covered from Weeks 4 through 9, craft an argument that explains why racial segregation has endured in the 21st century in spite of the fact that it has changed in some ways and remained the same in other ways. What purpose‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍s—both material and ideological—has segregation served in the post-Civil Rights Movement era? NOTES: Don’t just answer this question: craft a thesis that makes an argument in your introduction paragraph. It doesn’t have to be a groundbreaking revelation. You just need a concrete, clearly phrased claim that draws a logical connection between your body paragraphs. In the last paragraphs of your essay, you may want to mention some of the ways we could address continued racial segregation outside of what was already done during the Civil Rights Movement. What avenues should we be pursuing collectively to put an end to the social and economic hierarchies that stem in a large part from this country’s history of structural-geographic racism? here is the link where I put all the required readings:
