The French Revolution is full of debates, and very good historians on opposite sides of debates can (yes, even in 2021) become pretty heated in conferences when they try to convince the audience of their interpretation.At the end of this unit, you’re reading two historians, one Anglophone (Garrioch is Australian), one French (Chartier). One is a social historian, the other is a cultural historian. They have very different ideas about what caused the French Revolution. They also have very different methodologies and sources.Understanding how various historians have approached a problem is called doing historiographical research (break up that word and you get history and writing — historiography). It’s a good skill for historians and non-historians alike. We all need to know how to understand the terms of debates and assess whose argument has the more persuasive evidence and analysis.The historical thinking skill you will test as you write a historiographical paper is complexity. The French Revolution was extremely complex. It’s generated a lot of diverse interpretations from historians. You will come to understand specific details about those complex debates as you read Garrioch and Chartier. At the end of your essay, you should take a stand about which interpretation is more persuasive.
