You enrolled at NLU to pursue learning in an academic setting and to ultimately obtain a degree that will help you achieve personal and professional goals. Because our lives are often hectic and filled with details, we can lose track of our goals and how to reach them. Planning is one way that we can remember what we need to do to track and to resolve our goals. By creating a plan, we put our dreams on paper and make a visual map to follow.
This week, you read “Setting & Reaching Goals” from your textbook, and watched a video about setting SMART goals. Now, it’s time to set your own goals and write a success plan that will help you reach them. We’ll reflect and evaluate on these goals throughout the course.
Part 1: In a short introduction, describe your reasons for enrolling in college and how they relate to your long term vision for your future. How do you hope to grow and change over the next few months and years?
Part 2: In this section, you’ll write six different SMART goals. Your goals should include one short term and one long term goal for each of the following areas of your life: personal, professional, and academic. State each goal, and follow it with a discussion of the steps you’ll take accomplish it. Include any specific resources you’ll need to use to accomplish your goals. As the video stated, ‘Remember, smart goals say what you are going to do, and how you are going to do it.”
Example short term academic goal:
GOAL: In the summer term, I will stay caught up in my classes by completing all of my assignments the day before they are due.
ACTION PLAN: I will accomplish this goal by logging into my course early in the week and reviewing all upcoming assignments and readings. I will estimate how long each task will take me to complete, and use my planner to plan time to accomplish these assignments, and will let my instructor know if I have questions.
Part 3: Based on readings and activities you completed in this module, describe how your strengths will help you and describe the areas of opportunities for growing stronger.
Each section of your plan should contain details including any resources that you may need to use to accomplish your plan. Where appropriate, refer back to your VARK questionnaire results, the growth mindset, or other relevant information sources that helped inform your approach.
To help you complete this assignment, here is a guide: My Success Plan template.
It is already formatted for APA and will give you an idea of how all of your papers for this class should look.
