BMW is one of the automobile enterprises with long history of 105 years. BMW is famous for producing luxury cars, motorcycles and high-performance engines. Its cars are famous for their high quality and high performance in the world, its brand is juxtaposed with Mercedes Benz and Audi as a famous brand. However, despite, high-quality and long-history, their production of gasoline vehicle can not meet the requirement of new generation of consumers while the sustainability had become a common concern. It implies that consumers start thinking about issue of sustainable development when purchasing products and services. It is apparent that gasoline vehicle is one of the biggest reasons of high carbon emission. According to this new trend, there are more automobile enterprises applying themselves to the research and development of sustainable product–Electric vehicle, has popularized in the world(Figure1), and even the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, for achieving “Green Travel” and low emission of carbon. Moreover, the usage of recyclable material– Kenaf, Natural rubber and Econyl, simplification of manufacturing process, increase of vehicle life and cycle and so on are some important ideas that automobile enterprises embarked on. BWM as one of the earliest companies devoted themselves to the research of electric vehicle, some achievements have been made in this field such as the “i series”,”Peanut business” –nothing can be waste. Nowadays, it had published their higher goals in the electric vehicle area for better satisfying consumers’ need and social responsibility in sustainable development.
For BMW, there are some areas regarding sustainable development goal needs to be taken account of. When developing electric vehicle, BMW is supposed to pay more attention to SDG12, which is responsible consumption. In the application of materials, they should be environmental with high degradability and recyclability. Comparing to traditional process which has complex procedures with high consumption, the simplification of manufacturing process on electric vehicle become the goal of automobile enterprise, as it could reduce the consumption of energy. Additionally, energy utilization has also been concerned. Power recovery system is widely used in the electric vehicles of some competitive brands such as Tesla, which can also reduce the loss rate energy, for improving energy efficiency. At present, when gasoline vehicle is still main transportation tool which has high carbon emissions, vehicle companies ought to take more actions in the protection of climate, which is SDG13”climate action”. In this area, BWM and other companies applied Hybrid system to their vehicle in order to reduce the combustion of gasoline, which results in reduction of carbon dioxide emission. Moreover, excessive use of materials is also the reason of increasing carbon footprint, BMW set an objective in simplifying design and component usage of its production for meeting the requirement of protecting environment, which is also an effective measurement of climate action.
While sustainability is one of the most important factors for consumers to consider when purchasing, and corporate image is paid more and more attention by corporation, many historical vehicle companies such as BMW met the ethical dilemma. When the original production line has a higher profit margin, changing from gasoline vehicles to electric vehicles means the subversion of the product line, which requires a high transformation cost. However, the requirement of sustainable development is overwhelming that BMW is bound to react(Figure2). Not only in the promotion of electric vehicles, BMW needs more innovative initiatives and products to meet the developing need of sustainable goals.

BMW useing Lowering emissions with efficiency technologies and solutions for pollutant reduction In conventional drive vehicles BMW uses efficiency technologies and specific solutions to reduce pollutants. that was 48-volt electrical system, The use of 48-V technology provides several advantages for car manufacturers. It not only reduces the impact on the environment, but also improves engine performance, and most importantly, reduces fuel consumption For example, the BMW502d and 502 Touring use 48-volt technology, which can reduce fuel consumption by up to 0.3 liters per 100 kilometers. And gradually expanded to all of BMW’s diesel and gasoline engine series. Compared with 1995 EU BMW cars, CO2 emissions have been reduced by half
The depletion of scarce resources, the effects of climate change BMW Relying on optimized processes and the most advanced technology to reduce our water consumption and wastewater. BMW has introduced an anhydrous process in the foundry, reused the treated process wastewater, and further optimized the processes of paint shop and wastewater treatment plant. In order to minimise waste, BMW are developing recycling and reprocessing concepts that are customised for waste streams in the different plants Starting in the product development phase Since 2006, it has increased by approximately 45%. Since 2009, the manufacturing of the Austrian Steyr engine plant has achieved 100% waste-free discharge.

Sustainability is a principle that says that resources should be utilized in such a way that future generations can also take advantage of them just like the present one, it is now a demand of today’s world and businesses need to adopt sustainable business practices so that they can be compatible with the sustainable development goals of United nations.

Being one of the leading companies in the worldwide automobile industry company started investing in sustainable activities like the development of electronic -cars, extraction of resources that assist in the development of such vehicles, and also investing in many different environmentally friendly initiatives.

Due to the increase in demand for sustainable activities BMW must take some other initiatives as well, the proposed initiatives included investment and research in battery production, electro-mobile production, and in the development of charging stations for electronic cars. This is because we can see a huge increase in demand for electronic vehicles which require batteries and also requires charging stations as it uses charging as fuel, so as there are many competitors in electronic cars company can expertise and gain a name in quality charging stations and production of car batteries etc. But this not means it must not invest in electronic cars as it is future and if the company won’t consider the manufacturing of such vehicles it will not be able to survive in the automobile industry of future.
