I’d like you to write a persuasive essay which takes a stance for or against an issue of controversy that is important to you. For this essay, controversy can be defined as any issue—big or small—that generates at least two different opinions.
A specific controversy should address a question, as do the following examples:
Is random drug testing in the workplace an invasion of an employee’s privacy?
Should children be required to receive vaccinations even if their parents are against it?
Should hate group websites and bomb making websites be protected under freedom of speech/expression?
Remember, these are simply sample theses. You may choose one of these, or you may come up with a thesis yourself.

Please use our TCC Online Library to gather your sources. On the Library Homepage you’ll find “Research Guides.” Hit the option, “Controversies.” Scroll down to the light bulb image. Now you’ll see a list of databases. All of these are great, but the most helpful to you will be “ProCon.org”.
Steps to Consider:
Your essay needs to be a minimum of 450 words.
Make sure your thesis is a controversy.
Use Third Person Point of View unless you are drawing from personal experience for a brief anecdote.
DO NOT write phrases such as “In my opinion,” “I believe,” or “I think” because they create an under-confident tone.
Draw from at least one outside source. (Remember, TCC’s online library offers many databases that will help you research your topic.)
Weave at least two and no more than four direct quotations into your writing.
