I would like you to choose ONE of the following prompts to talk about.
1. Who was Wisdom, and what was her role in Old Testament imagery? What happens to her in New Testament imagery? (Here is something I wrote in the week 7 discussion board. Consider this before you discuss the prompt.) Hagia Sophiais Greek for Holy Wisdom, the guiding light in the Book of Proverbs. Thomas Merton, Trappist monk and one of the most influential Catholic spiritual writers of the twentieth century, came to see Hagia Sophia as the feminine aspect of the Holy Trinity–Father, Son, and Holy Wisdom (see Proverbs 8:22-31). She was for him and others the creative, compassionate, decidedly female face of God. While the author of Proverbs (Solomon?) surely had no concept of the Holy Trinity, he saw Wisdom as a wise, caring mother. In the Apocrypha’s Book of Wisdom, a companion to and imitator of Proverbs, Wisdom is described as the “holy spirit of instruction,” a “spirit that loves humanity,” a “breath of the power of God,” and a “reflection of the eternal light, an untarnished mirror of God’s active power, and an image of his goodness.”
2. How does the translation of the Bible from ancient languages into English raise significant problems for understanding the role of women or the feminine in biblical text and imagery?
3.What is patriarchy? What are some of the ways in which patriarchy influences biblical narrative? What does it mean to say that patriarchy is a “totalizing discourse”?
