intersections of race, class, gender, sex, and ethnicity, have debated and rethought the issues of
freedom, rights, and citizenship. Using your primary sources, consider how people’s diverse
perspectives shaped their own claims to citizenship and freedom. How did people define these ideas
differently? Why? How did their historical contexts (time period, context and place) shape their
interpretation of these ideals? How did these definitions and perspectives change over time? How do
these people (primary sources) point out the contradictions of the American Revolution? What is the
historical significance of understanding that, between 1776 and 1877, people were still trying to grasp
who was a citizen, who had freedom, and what was equality?
