For this topic, you will be asked to identify one strategy that Einstein used in his scientific work and explain another case in which scientists in another field employ the same strategy. For example, Einstein’s creative achievement sometimes depended on identifying false assumptions made in physical theories, by critically analyzing basic concepts. He realized in 1905 that the idea of “absolute simultaneity” was based on the assumption that we can send signals instantaneously. By rejecting this false assumption, Einstein could then reconcile the relativity postulate and the light postulate. Clearing away false assumptions, even quite subtle and plausible ones is often an important first step toward new insights. Your paper would first describe the Einsteinian strategy you have chosen (either this one or another), and then discuss how it has been employed by another scientist (or group of scientists). The strategy of revisiting basic concepts is an example, and you may focus on a different strategy that you have gleaned from our discussions of Einstein’s work. If you have chosen the second topic, you can either choose to: (1) describe the Einsteinian strategy you will discuss, or (2) discuss the other field in which this strategy has been employed.
