For this short assignment, you will read 2 short essays from James Baldwin, “The White Man’s Guilt” —published in Ebony Magazine in 1961, and “The American Dream and the American Negro” published in the New York Times in 1965. Select a few (no more than 3) key quotes or ideas that Baldwin makes in these essays, and show how these issues remain problematic, or how these issues have greatly improved, by finding books, YouTube videos (from Credible Sources), news that discuss the same or a similar topic.
For instance, in American Dream, Baldwin discusses America’s rejection and mistreatment of Black people in paragraph 6 of his essay, describing a sense of worthlessness created by the rejection from big business and the education system in America, which becomes a topic that Ta-Nehisi Coates discusses in his Between the World and Me as Coates writes a letter to his young son about America’s checkered history of race relations in America.
