For this discussion, we will continue with the basics of our other discussions. The concepts of assessment and grading are core to our profession, yet they often seem to generate the most discussion and debate. If it is your first or your 30th year, you will be making decisions as an educator that will affect how well your students ‘learn’ in your classroom and with your teaching. Therefore, lets consider the following prompts for our discussion:
discuss the role of ‘data driven’ decision making as it relates to instruction
interpret the role of formative and summative assessments – which do you think is a better indicator of success
describe how well conceived learning objectives relate to assessment
evaluate how alternate forms of assessment can both help and limit a teacher’s ability to asses their students
look at the notes you wrote especially from 6, 7 and 8. Provide a post on something of interest that has challenged your thinking and your ‘growth mindset’.
You can take any or all of the above prompts to start your discussion. Remember to respond to others posts, and also remember to address the other prompts in your responses as you move through the discussion.

Skim through these chapters and have something to make notes with as you do. Be especially sure to take notes on 3 important aspects that each chapter raises on Assessment and Instruction (6), Diagnostic and Formative (7), and providing formative Feedback (8). See Brookhart & Nitko Chapters 6, 7 & 8. We will use these notes to make up some of the discussion in this Module.
