For the final assignment, I want you to evaluate the Levitsky & Ziblatt book, more specifically:
GIVEN WHAT’S GOING ON NOW (2021), DID TRUMP SUCCEED IN UNDERMINING DEMOCRACY?
Address that question.
Clearly, the authors are trying to argue that Trump is (at the time they wrote the book) a danger to democracy, similar to many other examples of the book in foreign countries. And they make a compellling argument based on their criteria. The book was published about midway through Trump’s term of office, and in later chapters they write about some of Trump’s behaviors (Chapter 8 is particularly useful in this sense).
But did Trump succeed? Even if you did not follow his administration over the last four years as I did, you can discuss this in the context of the 2020 Presidential election (what happened?), and the coronovirus pandemic (one of Levitsky and Ziblatt’s concerns was that Trump would not be able to address a serious crisis — and the Covid 19 pandemic is certainly a serious crisis). And you can bring whatever else you wish into this argument. If you really want to impress the person grading this (me), go beyond Trump: He’s gone, but the Republican Party (or at least that part of the Republican Party who still supports him) remains.
