Final 8-page essay, double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman. Track a common image, figure, or motif in two to three texts. How does this figure change or transform across those texts? How does it remain the same? What does the use of this figure enable us to understand—might we synthesize its appearance across multiple texts into a broader definition or argument? My current plan is to use “The Communal Luxury” by Kristin Ross and “Poetry is not a luxury” by Audre Lorde to explore and compare the themes of luxury and ornaments in the texts. Some guiding questions that I thought of are: Are luxury and ornament the same? Is luxury used to develop oneself? How are these used in Communal Luxury and Poetry is not a Luxury? Is luxury an ornamentation of life or something else? In Poetry is not a Luxury, Is Audre Lorde seeking something like communal luxury or leading towards something like an ornament? Please refer to the attachments for the pdf of both texts and my (poorly written) previous essay for The Communal Luxury to get the ideas of the materials and how I write. And please don’t copy paste words from my previous essays to this one.
