Filial Piety is described in Confucius’ Analects as a core virtue to show kindness and respect toward one’s parents and ancestors. In The Memoirs of Lady Hyegyong, both the relationship between Prince Sado and King Yongjo, and Lady Hyegyong’s attempt to justify Prince Sado’s actions reveals the flaw of filial piety and honoring one’s family in 18th century Korea. What is supposed to be honoring and respecting one’s parents have turned into more of a deference and obedience. Also, Lady Hyegyong shows how the importance of lineage and her pursuit to make her family exempt from dishonor has pushed her to condone the Prince Sado’s sins by telling the situation he was in.
