Examine social studies textbooks and curricular materials and match them to musical materials and methods that could enhance and promote an understanding of society and culture. How might music help children to understand the African American struggle for freedom, the influence of trains on the American economy, the identities of people in Ghana, Mexico, the Navajo nation, and Vietnam, etc.?
· Lesson Plan: Select one culture to study through music. Find music from that culture. Learn what materials are used to create or perform these arts; why were they created, what do they represent, what meaning do they have for people, and how and when are they used.
· Develop a 15-minute lesson plan of child-centered activities, to help students engage creatively with these materials. Be sure to connect relevant themes to spin a thread through the music in these lessons. Reflect on what children might learn by engaging in those experiences.
· A lesson plan template (Word doc) designed for unit planning will be provided for this project in the Resources folder and with the assignment itself on Moodle.
· Your lesson plan must:
· 1) Demonstrate your ability to plan to teach both your social studies concept AND a song-based and/or instrument-oriented lesson to the class. You may plan for both musical activities if you desire. Accompaniment tracks, instruments, etc., may be used. Both subjects (core and music) must be equally balanced in this lesson plan.
· 2) Activities may include movements, a game, or another type of activity to reinforce the concept you are teaching.
