1) Pick one of the theories of distributive justice.
a) Mill’s Utilitarianism (you might look at how Gibbard applies it)
b) Rawls’ Justice as Fairness (you might consult Daniels interpretation of it).
2) Pick a health care plan
You can choose our current system, a public option, or Medicare for all. I’ve given you some links on Canvas to get information about these plans (healthlinks.pdf) but feel free to do your own research as well. As you research the plans, here are some things you might ask about them (you don’t have to discuss all these issues in your paper but these are suggestions of things you might discuss)
a) Do they provide universal coverage?
b) Can people opt-out (what Segall calls in-kind universality)?
c) Is the plan single-tier or multi-tier?
d) What is covered? All health needs? Some health needs? Enhancements?
3) Is the plan you picked just according to the theory you picked?
Here, you might note various ways the plan complies or fails to comply with the requirements of justice according to the theory you picked. If the plan is not consistent with the demands of the theory of justice you picked, is this an objection to the plan or to the theory?
Grading
Since we didn’t cover the plans in class, I’ll mostly grade you based on your understanding of the theory you pick and your ideas about how to apply it. But try your best to grasp the plan you are discussing.
