c‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ourse was designed to get you to think more broadly and deeply about your decisions – to realize that they must be aligned with your broader goals, and thought through carefully so that the decision actually move you toward those goals. In addition, your decisions (and goals) will affect others, and most likely be dependent on others as well. Thus, finding ways to integrate and align your decision-making activities with others is a means to improve the likelihood of success. Yet our goals are only as good as our perspectives allow. Far too often we fail to see innovative solutions because we are to blinded by our current perspectives. Once again, leveraging others’ knowledge can help us to change our own perspective for the better, but only when we realize that this is a gradual process that requires effortful processing, testing, and potentially abandoning assumptions that we may have been strongly committed to holding. Thus what seems like a small decision may, in fact, have large ripple effects. For this reflection paper, I want you to think about an important decision that you will have to make in the near future. I then want you to answer the following questions in a manner that clarifies your problem and your perspective, and allows you think more productively about what you need to know, what you need to do, and who you should partner with: First, articulate the basic problem structure What is the decision you need to make? What problem is this decision critical for? What is the goal you will have for th‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍at problem? What parts need to change to meet the goal? What actions will you take to change the parts? What kind of event does this problem represent? What do you want your role (self-concept) to be in solving this problem? Thinking about your self-concept in this event Using your judge – What are the beneficial things you hope will come of this decision? What are the detrimental things you hope to avoid? Using your scientist – re-evaluate how well your PAGES will help you achieve what you think you want to achieve/avoid with this perspective Next, consider those who you might need to rely on for either assistance or buy in for the decision you want to make and think about: Who are those people (pick 3 maximum)? For each person: Where might their goals align with yours? Where might they misalign? How will you attempt to bridge those rGaps? Finally, when you think about your goals in the context of others’ goals, reflect on adding the artist: Is this the best perspective, or might you be able to innovate? Are there any cues (dissatisfaction, surprise, impasse) that you think might emerge as you work toward the goal? What aspects of PAGES could you change to potentially expand your perspective and open up new possibilities that will improve your outcomes? Your answers to these questions need not be extensive, but they should demonstrate that you understand how to apply the material I taught you. I would expect you could answer all of these questions in about 3-5 pages total. Again, quality and clarity matter more than ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍quantity.
