assignment 2: Entering a Conversation (4 pages):
the sets of essays are listed below (they are also attached below). Summarize (ch. 1) both of the arguments (“they say”), explain how the authors agree and disagree, and craft your own response (ch. 4) to the issues the two essays raise (“I say”). Make sure you include a naysayer (ch. 6) to show possible objections to your argument and address the “so what?” (ch. 7) factor: why does this issue matter?
Set 1:
Carole Cadwalladr, “Google, Democracy, and the Truth about Internet Search”
Zeynep Tufekci, “Does a Protest’s Size Matter?”
“Audience: Your audience for this assignment is your instructor and your classmates. Although your readers are familiar with the texts you are summarizing, you should thoroughly represent its main ideas and key points, and provide accurate textual evidence throughout.
Requirements:
Introduce the texts in the beginning of your paper so your readers know which texts you are summarizing, analyzing, and responding to. Include the author names, the date of publication, and the publication title within the first few sentences;
Focus on the writers’ arguments by reporting the text’s thesis and supporting ideas;
Summarize (ch. 1) both of the arguments (“they say”) (approx.1/2 page-1 page);
Explain how the authors agree and disagree (approx. 1/2 page-1 page);
Craft your own response (ch. 4) to the issues the two essays raise (“I say”) (approx. 2 pages;
Make sure you include a naysayer (ch. 6) to show possible objections to your argument;
Address the “so what?” (ch. 7) factor: why does this issue matter?
Cite the templates you use in the body of your paper;
Cite any quotations or paraphrases you include using MLA formatting.
REMEMBER: The assignments build on one another: the first asked you to summarize and respond to a single essay. Now, you are moving forward with this second essay, which asks you to summarize two related essays and then enter the conversation found in the two essays.
The third assignment, a bridge to the longer, self-initiated final project, asks you to describe a larger conversation (that is, involving more than two viewpoints) in either your field or your community (or perhaps in response to more than two essays in the book).
The final assignment, a culminating piece, uses your own research to support an argument related to the conversation you describe in the third assignment.”
