ART HISTORY. Two papers, one page max each. paper one: Visualizing the ‘Modern’ What aspect of ‘Modern’ art do you find the most intriguing/interesting and why? (for the purpose of this task, let’s limit this definition to cover anything from the 1890s to the 1950s). Choose any art piece (any medium, any region/location in the 2 world) from the modern period (use Smarthistory and/or Heilbrunn timeline for reference). Beyond citing information found in articles and any random links you come across in Smarthistory or the Heilbrunn Timeline, discuss your chosen work of art in relation to concepts we have covered in lecture/tutorial for Week 8. Your discussion might include, but is not limited to, ‘modern’ forms and/or techniques; gender and modernism; cultural meanings of the ‘modern’ and how these relate to the piece you have chosen, and concepts of power and/or privilege. paper two: Practice/Theory/History The ‘Practice’ of creative work, is a multi-faceted and complex process that is influenced both by personal ideas/motives but also informed by cultural norms, institutional frameworks, and the histories and theories of art and design that one has been exposed to through education. Concepts of ‘self’, ‘other’, ‘artist’, and ‘maker’ change over time and are further mediated by lived experience in relation to gender, race, ability and intersectionality. Option 1) Choose any artist producing work at some point between the 1970s to now, and discuss their artistic output in relation to concepts of both theory and practice in a historical context. Explore their ‘practice’ and try to situate (contextualize) it in light of the definitions/approaches I’ve outlined above. formatting/content requirements: Content/focus: Submissions should discuss lecture material, with an emphasis on further discussions and/or activities from your tutorial sessions for the weeks in question. You are encouraged to connect class material to personal interests and/or research completed outside of class time. Academic and popular/journalism sources are both acceptable— although it should be noted that research outside the class context is not required. Please 3 feel free to use every-day prose—the tone can be factual/conversational or even quite emotive/personal and/or reflective. Length/Format: Each task should comprise a couple of paragraphs (up to 1 page max), depending on the formatting of your text (single-space is recommended).
