Theology and Holy War: the role of religion justifying the Crusades The purpose of this assignment is to research a topic connected to the Crusades using the library’s print and electronic resources, structure an argument, and write an elegant essay. This means your essay must be thesis-driven, well researched, and well written. Your text should be an analysis of a question, resulting in a thesis supported by arguments, and not a description or narrative. Assessment criteria: 1. Knowledge of the period, key events, players, and developments — all, of course, connected to your topic. 2. Research Skills: your capacity to navigate scholarship, find essential texts, and produce a valid bibliography. 3. Communication Skills: your capacity to summarize, articulate, and present academic content. 4. Analytical Skill: your capacity to develop research questions, produce logically sound arguments, and support them with primary and secondary sources. 5. Your progress in the course: read carefully my notes on your Document Analysis — I expect you to produce a better essay for the final. Basic Guidelines: All told, you should handle at least four sources, including primary and secondary sources —more are, of course, welcome.
