_Assignment V: Please write a short essay that delineates your reactions to the following comments by Dr. Benedict Anderson regarding culture and nationalism:
What is Culture and why is it important. As children of the Enlightenment, we tend to celebrate the symbols, music, and languages that are intimately linked to the country of our national origins. On every first Monday in the month of September, many people from the Caribbean participate in the Labor Day Parade. The parade gives each participant an opportunity to demonstrate his/her national pride. However, Dr. Benedict Anderson, in his book titled Imagined Communities (1983), argued that national pride –a la nationalism—and the feelings it evoke are largely “imagined.” According to Anderson, Culture— when it congruent with a defined territorial space gives birth to Nationalism— is a story of national origins that creates imagined community amongst the citizens of the modern state. According to New Learning website, Dr. Anderson argues that a nation is imagined because of several reasons.
“First, the nation is imagined as limited because even the largest of them, encompassing perhaps a billion living human beings, has finite, if elastic boundaries, beyond which lie other nations … Second, it is imagined as sovereign because the concept was born in an age in which Enlightenment and Revolution were destroying the legitimacy of the divinely-ordained, hierarchical dynastic realm … Finally, it is imagined as community, because, regardless of the actual inequality and exploitation that may prevail in each, the nation is always conceived as deep, horizontal comradeship. Ultimately it is this fraternity that makes it possible, over the past two centuries, for so many millions of people, not so much to kill, as willingly to die for such limited imaginings …”
