1500-2000 words
requires at least four sources, both primary sources and secondary
Primary would be info on climate change directly, analysis of same and discussion of things like cognitive bias etc are secondary sources.
For your final writing assignment I am going to ask you to write a piece that proposes to create a piece of media that responds in some way to one specific chapter, of your choosing, from Don’t Even Think About It. You might be proposing a television show, a podcast, or a movie, and it can be any kind of genre:
documentary, reality show, talk show, or even fiction. The aim of this piece of media is to inform, to fight misinformation, and possibly (this does not have to be a definite aim) to change minds about climate warming. A documentary might seem like the most obvious way to inform, but you must avoid preaching to the choir (reaching only an audience that already agrees with you) and try to reach people who do not share your opinion. In other words you will have to fight confirmation bias.
You must also avoid false equivalence–that is, do not assume and report on the “two sides” of global warming as if the two sides are of equal weight and credibility. You will have to scrupulously avoid fallacies.
You must provide documentation for your facts and ideas in MLA format, and should get very detailed about this show.
Some things I expect:
Begin with a quote from the book that is your jumping off point and note which chapter it comes from. Try to find a quote that really captures a very specific idea, not a quote that sounds like it could come from any chapter.
Be very specific about what the show will cover.
You should include a description of what the show is that includes how it is attempting to change minds or inform people who do not want to be informed (because those that do already are). This piece of writing should be at least two pages long and include responding to the issues that Don’t Even Think About It
brings up about why it is difficult to get people to be concerned about this issue.
Then another three pages of script (at least two pages) and nitty gritty description of the show itself, possibly including who is cast, and what kind of music, visuals, shots, etc. are being used, and relating these back to your initial description of the show and how they carry out your ideas.
