1. Consider a problem area in the public safety discipline you’re in or the discipline you’re pursuing a career in. Analyze the problem from the perspective of an administrator in that organization and develop a recommendation to solve the problem that you would be willing to present to a chief decision-maker in that organization. Because we’ve been dealing with the historical context of public safety and principles of management, your analysis must include both of those components (see below). If the problem you’re considering doesn’t have a historical component or is not impacted by management principles, which is doubtful, you should consider a different problem.
a. Your paper must address:
i. The history of the problem:
1. What historical factors have either caused or contributed to the cause of the problem
i. You might find that societal norms or the available technology led to the “problem” not being considered a problem at the time.
2. What attempts have been made through history to remedy the problem?
i. What, if any factors thwarted efforts to rectify the problem.
ii. The management duties and/or principles of management discussed in the readings that impact(ed) the problem.
1. Depending on the problem and its history, you might discuss:
a. The management principles/duties of a manager that should have been employed but weren’t and led to the problem
b. Management principles/duties of a manager that were employed, perhaps incorrectly or inefficiently, that contributed to the problem.
iii. The recommended solution to the problem
1. As discussed in introduction to the assignment, you should approach this component from the perspective of an administrator. To that end, you might consider budget, consensus building, morale, efficient, cost vs. benefit etc. Remember, you’re approaching this problem, which has historical roots, as an administrator telling the boss what you and your fellow administrators can do to fix the problem.
1. Your paper should:
a. Be three to six pages—not including the cover page and works cited page
b. Be double spaced
c. Use 12-point font
d. Cite at least two academic sources beyond the readings
e. Be as thorough as space allows. The depth of your analysis will likely depend on the problem area you address. When picking a problem to write about, be conscious of the space limitations and pick a topic that you can adequately address in no more than six pages.
2. Your instructor will be looking for you to:
a. Think critically about the material you’ve read for the class and make connections between the material and the real-world public safety problem.
b. Offer sufficient support for your position. This is not solely an “opinion” paper.
c. Follow the specific guidelines in these instructions as well as the general guidelines in the rubric for the assignment.
