Undergraduate Case Study Student X is a third year undergraduate student. During her first two years of study she passed all assessments at the first attempt and appeared to have adjusted well to life as a dental/medical student. Her first semester of third year was unremarkable. During the Spring Semester the Director of Education was contacted by a placement supervisor to discuss student X’s behaviour. She frequently arrived late. She was rude and tetchy with teachers and peers. When asked by teachers about her behaviour student X indicated there were no underlying issues. The Director of Education arranged to meet student X. During the meeting she explained that she is supporting herself financially, she is working in a bar every night during the week. She spends four hours working in a supermarket every Sunday. The Director of Education explained the importance of maintaining an appropriate work life balance. Student X agreed to review her part-time employment arrangements and ensure that she engaged fully with the undergraduate programme. Six weeks later the Direc‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍tor of Education receives a report that student X has forged a signature on an attendance register for a peer who failed to attend a teaching session. On investigation it becomes apparent that student X is dependent on alcohol and is a frequent user of recreational drugs. It is also clear that student X was forced by her peer to sign the register on her behalf. The peer is aware of student X’s alcohol and drug use. Questions 1. What aspects of student X’s behaviour concern you and why? 2. How might you try to manage these issues? 3.
