One of our Post University Child Studies Faculty, Casey Lumb, created the above “What is Play Therapy” video and PowerPoint to share her love of the Play Therapy profession with you! Casey is a licensed play therapist who often teaches this course. After viewing the video and the PowerPoint, discuss the following:

  • What are the therapeutic values of play?
  • When was a time you witnessed or experienced the therapeutic powers of play?
  • Using the A4PT.org website, find a play therapy training and explain why it interests you.
  • Using the A4PT.org website, or psychologytoday.com, find a therapist that uses play therapy in your state and describe what you have learned about them.

RE: What is Play Therapy?

COLLAPSE

After reading over the videos and materials for this week. when it comes to play therapy it is how children begin to learn, how they make sense of the world and the things that are around them, communicate, socialize, and cope with challenges in their life. Play therapy helps children to become more responsible for their behaviors and develop more successful strategies. Play is how a child begins to learn how to communicate and talk to others. A time when I witnessed the therapeutic power of play was the first week of school when a child had first started school. The child wasn’t used to me or the other teacher so when the child would come in they would scream and holler when mom dropped them off. When it came to the child not speaking it was hard because the child was learning English. So we asked mom what are some words that we can learn to help the child and we printed out pictures so the child would be able to point to things that he wanted or needed. We would try to make the child comfortable and let them know that they are safe in our hands we would teach them and when that child warmed up to us with open arms the child would give us hugs and interact with us and once the child would leave hugs and smile and we know that the child has opened up to us and the child is speaking a little more English words from when he first started school. The thing that caught my attention and I think that I would be interested in is a practitioner of touch in working with children in play therapy. this training interests me because I feel like it will be a training that explains how touch therapeutic communication is important when it comes to play therapy.

Using the A4PT.org website therapist that I found in my state was Stacy Athens who is from Saginaw Michigan. i have learned that Stacey served and worked with children from the age of 5 and up, teens, young adults, and adults. Stacey is a Therapist and social worker who loves and builds trusting relationships with all her clients and their families. She focuses on helping the children in families in the areas that they need help in.

Question to the class: Why do you think it’s important to ask children questions while playing?

RE: What is Play Therapy?

Hello everyone,

Play therapy is where children use play to process their feelings and experiences (Edward-Elmhurst Health, 2018). The therapist frequently employs games and toys to help children express themselves and resolve their problems. Children with a wide range of problems, such as trauma, anxiety, and behavioral problems, might benefit from play therapy.

Play has several therapeutic benefits for children, such as helping them deal with emotions, developing coping skills, self-esteem, and creative stimulation (Edward-Elmhurst Health, 2018). Children who get play therapy could benefit from improved social skills and self-expression.

Play can heal, as I have personally seen with my children. I discovered that playing with my children helped them process their feelings and express themselves when they were having trouble. Additionally, I have observed that play therapy benefits children in the classroom. A brief play break could help children refocus and regain control when they are having trouble focusing or acting appropriately.

The play therapy program that most intrigues me is the American Association for Play Therapy’s Play Therapy Training for School Counselors. This training aims to teach school counselors how to work with children using play therapy. I am interested in it because this training can benefit my students.

Summer Minor is a therapist in my state who does play therapy (Psychology Today, n.d.). She holds dual degrees in professional counseling and marriage and family therapy and is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Candidate. She is completing the requirements to become an Oklahoma-licensed trauma play therapist. She holds certifications in the Gottman Method, EMDR, and trauma-focused CBT.

It was brought to my knowledge that she possesses extensive expertise and training in play therapy. She has experience working with children of all ages and with various problems. She seems like a great resource for families seeking assistance for their children.

Question – Do you feel like play therapy helps, or is there another one you like better?
