RE: Unit 2 Discussion: Cultural Competence

COLLAPSE

Hello everyone,

Students acquire a more thorough comprehension of the subject matter when they collaborate and learn with others from different origins and cultures in the classroom. Additionally, it teaches students how to contribute to a diverse environment by using their perspectives and areas of strength. Cultural diversity is essential in the classroom. You should have cultural events and activities, put up items that connect to the culture around the classroom, and honor and celebrate the culture to help children and their families feel like they belong in the classroom.

Since I am not teaching in my classroom, I found it challenging to complete the information self-assessment of my own culture. I work in a classroom with the head teacher, two teaching assistants, and two teacher aides. To address these issues, I focused on when the two teaching assistants and I switched the classroom’s toys and books. My suggested changes would include printed materials such as magazines that show the many cultures of children and their families in the classroom. I would also look for resources to help me learn the fundamental terms I would need to know in their language if a child’s family in my classroom did not speak English.

Question: What other changes could a teacher make in the classroom to do better on this self-assessment?

Hello Professor and Peers,

After going over the self-assessment checklist. I found that most of the things listed that I already do as an educator who has encounter several families who come from different cultural background and who also has a language barrier. In addition, the only question I found surprising was under ” Values and attitudes”. In my opinion as an educator it is important to remain professional and set aside my own personal beliefs and culutre because at the time its not about me.
