The Exploration Forum is a chance to discuss any topics related to this unit or the course. It is an opportunity to think about how the concepts we cover relate to you and your work as an early childhood practitioner. It allows you to express your thoughts, expand your thinking, gain knowledge and perspective, share and view resources, and gather ideas about approaching the course assignments. Think of this as “practice time,” where you ponder, apply, and make connections while earning points based solely on participation.
There are no assigned topics or questions to answer and no length requirement. While you should use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation, your grade will be based solely on participation.

RE: Unit 5 Exploration Forum
I wanted to discuss puppets. I have seen them used with older children, and they worked well in showing what other people may look or dress like, but without someone to act as though they were that person, it only showed what they looked like. We had a relatively diverse group of employees at my last daycare, which was far more effective than puppets. Having actual examples of how people look, dress, or sound allows children to ask questions and be curious while getting answers correctly and knowing they are suitable for asking questions.

RE: Unit 5 Exploration Forum
Puppets can help children to express their emotions in a safe and non-threatening way. Through puppet play, children can act out their emotions without fear of judgement or criticism from others. This allows them to explore and experiment with different emotions in a safe and secure environment. It can also provide a way for children to understand how their feelings may impact their behavior and the way they interact with others.
Puppets can also help children to gain empathy. Through puppet play, children can role-play different scenarios and gain a better understanding of how their emotions may affect others. For example, a child may act out a situation in which they are feeling angry and how it affects their interactions with others. This can help them to recognize when someone else may be feeling a similar emotion, and how they can best respond in a compassionate and understanding way.

RE: Unit 5 Exploration Forum
I really enjoyed watching the video about puppets. In the classroom that I work in, there are times we create a puppet show together. I allow the kids to show their own uniqueness and create their own voice for their puppets. Puppets can create a fun and exciting environment for children. It can help some children to “come out of their shell”. I think that teachers can use puppets to foster relationships and build connections with children that may be shy, or some that may not be as verbal as others. Allowing them to be creative as they made their own puppet helped to show their individual uniqueness.
We have a new child that was really shy in our classroom. We wanted to encourage her to use her words and talk more to us and the students. We have tried several things, but after watching the video, I think that I can create a character using one of our puppets to try and communicate with her. This may look silly, but maybe she will open up and start to enjoy being at school.

RE: Unit 5 DB: Leadership and Management
Hello Prof. Farquharson and classmates,
Several characteristics make someone a good leader and a good manager. A good leader should be respectful, have self-awareness, and be authentic. A leader should show respect to their team to have effective communication. Self-awareness allows leaders to manage their emotions better and avoid reacting and leading in disruptive ways. Instead, they can respond to challenges and conflicts more effectively. Authentic leadership style allows leaders to be honest and be their whole selves at their jobs. People like to follow and collaborate with authentic leaders who show a genuine concern for the well-being of others and are sincere and honest.
A good manager is also characterized by having effective traits. A manager should have good communication skills, be fair, and have emotional resilience. A strong communicator means listening, allowing others to speak, being clear when explaining tasks, and keeping everyone productive. Employees want to work with an impartial manager who treats everyone fairly and builds a diverse and inclusive team. Emotional resilience allows a manager to cope well with challenging circumstances, pressure, stress, and anxiety without affecting the team. I have worked in about six places and had different managers and leaders.
My recent leader is impressive. She makes us feel valued and respected. She has many traits that make her a good leader. She has good communication skills. She sets clear expectations and is frequently communicating with the staff. She listens to our ideas and concerns, and her office door is always open, making herself visible for everyone to communicate openly with her. Leadership and management can be combined to have better results in an organization. Leaders and managers have to listen to each other and come to an agreement about any subject or impasse. Leaders can communicate the organization’s goals, vision, and direction to employees. Managers can organize and guide them with the right resources and plans to reach their goals.

RE: Unit 5 DB: Leadership and Management
Three effective traits of leaders are problem-solving skills, confidence, and communication. Three effective traits of managers are communication, organization, and emotional intelligence. In the past, I worked for a military base Starbucks and I had the most amazing manager. She was not the most organized but she had good communication, a positive attitude, and she could solve any problem thrown her way. No matter what happened during the day I knew we could handle it because we had her there with us. I think I learned most of my leadership skills from watching her. I feel the trait that was most important in her success in mentoring others was her positive attitude. No matter what was going on outside of work she always came to work with a positive attitude which helped us all get through the day. I think leadership and management go hand in hand. If you are not a good leader then you cannot manage a group of people. When you are in a leadership role such as a manager people are looking to you for guidance. They need to know they can come to you and you will be available. If you do not seem confident in what you are doing then people will not want to come to you.
