Unit 2 DB: Board Recruiting

Unit 2 DB: Board Recruiting

Imagine you are recruiting a board member for your future childcare business. Search the Internet to find someone with the qualifications and skills of a board member to bring forward to your nominating committee. Present and discuss the person’s biography/occupation and why you feel their qualifications and skills make them a good candidate to serve on your board.   It is a requirement that you provide the link to your candidate.

When responding to classmates discuss the significance of recruiting qualified board members and respectfully either agree or disagree with your classmate’s choice for a nominee.

Hi everyone,

I have imagined that I am recruiting a board member for my future childcare business. After searching the internet to find someone with the qualifications and skills of a board member to bring into my nominating committee, I came across one celebrity that I thought could be a great liaison. While this celebrity may not have the qualifications right off the bat to act as a board member, she has done a great deal for children all over the world. Dolly Parton created her own charity called Imagination Library. This organization sends different books to children all over the world. Since she started this charity in 1996, she has donated over one hundred million books. According to Jerica Deck at Global Citizen (2018), “While the program started in the singer’s home state of Tennessee, it now serves millions of children in four countries around the world.” Dolly Parton started this type of charity work out of her own home, which takes so much effort, work and dedication. So while she might not have a degree in Early Childhood Education or the like, she had the dedication to make a difference in children’s lives. In my opinion, that is one of the strongest qualities to have in someone when you are starting a buisness that is all about the needs and education of young children.

According to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (n.d.), “Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families… By mailing high quality, age appropriate books directly to their homes, Dolly wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.” Fostering a love for books and reading is one of the biggest goals an educator working with young children should posess. Having the ability to find stories that show diversity, family structures and people from all over the world allows children to make connections to books and let their imaginations run wild. With Dolly Parton having the ability to see that reading is such a fundamental skill and need for young children, leads me to believe she would be an incredible choice to sit on the board for my future childcare buisness.

Hello Prof. Farquharson and classmates,

I found the right person to be a board member for my future childcare business. She is part of the NAEYC leadership team. Her name is Michelle Kang, and her position is the Chief Executive Officer. I chose Michelle as the board member because she is part of the NAEYC. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is an organization that has the responsibility to promote high-quality early learning in safe, nurturing, and healthy settings for children from birth through age eight. Before becoming a CEO, Michelle was the Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer, overseeing Membership’s strategy and daily operations. During the pandemic, she conducted virtual conferences serving thousands of educators. She was part of making substantial system adjustments to support preschools and children through the pandemic. Michelle worked at Bright Horizons for 16 years and had a leadership role; her most recent position there was as Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and Operational Strategy. “Michelle holds a Bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary, a Masters of Education in Leadership and Policy from the University of Virginia, and a Masters of Science in Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management from Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford (UK).” (Michelle Kang. NAEYC. n.d.). She is a married woman and the mother of three children. I am sure that, as every mom Michelle wants the best for their children’s learning and development and will be a great support and an excellent candidate to serve on your board.

I work at an after-school program and each week I have my children do worksheets based on that week’s theme. When they are done I hang their work outside the classroom for the other children and workers to see what they did that week in my classroom. After the week is over every Friday I give them back their papers to take home so they can show their parents what they did that week at the program. After they are done with their work they are able to get on a computer or play with legos, draw, or play with puzzle games. They always have a choice on what they can do after their assignment is done they are also given a little dinner to eat afterwards before they go home. And we close at 6:00 so at 5:45 they are sent to the front of the building to wait until they are picked up. So I am able to clean my classroom before the program closes but this is an everyday routine for me and for them throughout the week.

I am excited about working in a new classroom this year. I am associate teacher at a Headstart and my lead teacher is not really into art. So, of course I love it and I get a chance to create activities and have my small group create crafts based on the week’s theme or a nursery rhyme. Because we are not confied to a specific thing, I can create fun activities for the  and 4 year olds. I love to draw, so its like a passion of mine to show them the amazing things they can learn as they find appreciation for art. We read a story about shapes and I allowed them to think about their favorite shape fromt he story and create a SHAPE MONSTER. They could create their own style of arms, legs, eyes, and choose the emotion for their monster. I loved watching them work and now when they have choice time, most of the class comes to me to see what fun things they can do in the art area!

Debra Simmons Hi everybody I’m a mother of three children who are grown now.

I was married unfortunately I lost my husband and had to raise my children on my own.

Yes, it was a struggle but by the grace of God, I made it through. I’m 69 years old and back in college to pursue an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education here at Post University.

I started off working with children after I had my own children while volunteering when they were in school.

I was at school with my children so much they just gave me a job in the Before and After Program in the morning when the children came to school and after watched the children in the evening until the parents came to pick them up to go home.

My husband worked in D.C. Public Schools for 30 years.

The teachers always needed help with their children every day and I was glad to be there to help.

Now, I have grandchildren in school my, oldest grandchild is a Junior in college my youngest grandchild is just starting school this year. I enjoy working with children and working with my own as well.
