5a. Complete Literature Review, Page limit: 5 Clearly state and explain the problem, and the interest in the area. What is the project trying to explore or describe, explain, predict or evaluate? Explain why this is an important area in social work or human services. Include any data and/or facts to justify the importance of this study, with reference source(s). Clearly define what you intend to examine in your research study. Literature Review The point of a literature review is to synthesize and integrate the previous literature in the area of your study related to your identified problem. The Literature Review is important in any research proposal/project because it gives context and background to the reader and sets the foundation for why your research is important and how it is related to the existing body of literature (Adapted from Creswell, 2009). Describe the present state of knowledge in an area of interest by synthesizing and integrating and identifying gaps in the literature that that need to be addressed. What is the prevalence of the problem you propose to study? What factors precede the problem? What other problems are consequences of the problem? What interventions have been used to try and change the problem? 5b. Part Two: Methodology Page limit: 5 The purpose of this section of your paper is to provide specific details of your actual research proposal – how you plan to obtain and collect your data – and allows the reader to assess the reliability and validity of your study. The main point of this assignment is to describe your research design (project description), who you are studying (sample and participants), how your data will be obtained (data collection), and how you are defining and measuring your key concepts (questionnaire). Note: The methodology of used in your proposed study should be quantitative. Project Description Describe in some detail the design of your project. Is it cross sectional, longitudinal, experimental, non-experimental? Is your project quantitative or qualitative? Is it descriptive or evaluative? Discuss the advantages and challenges to your design. Be as detailed as possible so that any person reading your paper would be able to carry out an identical project (replicate it). Research Questions and Hypothesis(es) The research question is the most critical piece in developing a research project. It is the foundation on which everything lies and guides the project. Based on the literature review, state the specific question(s) you intend to address. Although you may have many good questions, choose only one or two concise questions that you will be able to answer. Use an open-ended format for your question. Questions that can be answered with yes and no are not effective. Identify the hypotheses of your project. Each hypothesis states the expected reaction between dependent variable and an independent variable. Be succinct in your wording, and understand that how you state your hypotheses ties directly into a smooth and logical discussion of your methods and analysis. Sample and Participants Define the population of your study. Identify the sample you propose to use and its characteristics (number of participants, gender, age, race/ethnicity, etc.). How will you protect against bias in selecting your sample? Data Collection Procedure Describe how, where, and when data will be collected. Make it clear what will be done, who will be involved, and why data will be collected in this manner. The reader should understand exactly what is planned from this description and WHY it is being done in this way. Describe how participants’ rights will be protected – how will consent be obtained and how will anonymity and confidentiality be protected. Define ethical issues that are present and how do plan to address them. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of your sampling methodology. Instrumentation Create a draft version of the quantitative questionnaire or evaluation instrument. Give a detailed description of the questionnaire that will be used within Part Two of your paper. Identify how you will be measuring the concepts you identified in your literature. Include conceptualization and operationalization of the main measures in your study. Identify how will issues of validity and reliability be addressed. If using an existing instrument, provide information on prior use of instruments (validity, reliability, previous populations, etc.). 5c. Part Three: Final Proposal Page limit: 15 pages maximum, plus 10 to 15 item instrument, references, and appendices (20 points) The proposal is a revised version of two previous assignments. In addition, the proposal should have at least three limitations or barriers to your study sufficiently explained in detail. You should also discuss how your study will contribute to social work practice and the general field of knowledge for the agency/program/population. Additionally, there should be some discussion regarding how your study will advance trauma-informed care and/or human rights. Grading criteria for the final proposal is much higher than those for the two previous papers. If you do not revise your previous papers for the final paper based on my comments, you will get much lower grade than what you have received before. This paper should follow APA format, utilizing subheadings and proper citing procedure across the major sections and reference section.
