George (2015) describes the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivators that influence and drive us to act the way we do. In intrinsic, the motivation rewards internally, unlike extrinsic, where one is motivated to do things that return external rewards. People who practice extrinsic motivation do what they do for either rewards or to avoid punishment. There is no personal enjoyment or satisfaction in their activities, “True North” (p. 129).
(Legault, 2016) defines Extrinsic Motivation as “acting in a manner whose central importance is dependent on the results that are not related to the action itself. An example is when my daughter walks the dog to receive an allowance. Intrinsic is the opposite of this definition. There is no intended outcome from the action as long as it is enjoyable. For example, volunteering at the New York Marathon event to cheer the runners. More often, one can quickly close the line of intrinsic motivation to extrinsic when they become too successful at what they do or vice versa. It is of crucial importance for an organization to understand what motivates employees. Knowing the motivators will help to a fulfilling and enriching work environment (Turner (2017).
The extrinsic motivator vital to me is money and power. My financial stability allows me to influence the changes I want to see in marginalized societies. The intrinsic motivator that is most important to me is impacting the world. I find it rewarding to help the financially disadvantaged sustainably get on their feet. Creating jobs that pay fair wages and fair working conditions is fun and satisfying for me.
