Unit 7: Exploration Forum
The Exploration Forum is a chance to discuss any topics related to this unit or the course. It is an opportunity to think about how the concepts we cover relate to you and your work as an early childhood practitioner. It allows you to express your thoughts, expand your thinking, gain knowledge and perspective, share and view resources, and gather ideas about approaching the course assignments. Think of this as “practice time,” where you ponder, apply, and make connections while earning points based solely on participation.
There are no assigned topics or questions to answer and no length requirement. While you should use proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation, your grade will be based solely on participation.

Unit 7
I find the concept and title for the week very interesting. When I read “Planning for the Heart and Soul,” I had to stop and think. I had to reflect on how I supported social-emotional growth in my preschool/ pre-k classrooms. I thought back on how I helped children feel safe and included and helped my students build a community. So, after reflecting on those aspects of my past classes, I feel that it is vital to create and plan on making an inclusive space that allows children to make mistakes and work through their ever-growing emotions. So when I read “Planning for the Heart and Soul,” I think of different ways to help coach children through complex emotions, creating areas where they can be alone, and different ways to teach empathy and inclusivity.

Multiple Intelligences
I know because of Howard Gardner that there are multiple intelligences and that people learn differently. Music learners and much different from interpersonal and that is okay. Us as educators have to get to know our children so they can succeed. We have to learn their likes and dislikes, what makes them want to learn more and what is not interesting to them at all. I wouldnt expect a child who is quick with math and retains it easily, to learn the same as a child who requires music to retain information or enjoys learning more by listening to music. What type of learner would you say you are?

Unit 7 DB: Describing the Importance of Art and Play
Describe in your own words the importance of art in the early childhood curriculum. Then post an activity that combines art and play outdoors. How would you explain the importance of art for parents? What type of activity could you suggest for parents to expand art and play at home?

RE: Unit 7: Describing the Importance of Art and Play
Hello everyone,
Describe, in your own words, the importance of art in the early childhood curriculum.
To me, using art in the early childhood curriculum is essential, as it encourages imagination and creativity. It encourages children to use their imaginations, develop creative concepts, and develop new perspectives (Children’s Museum Team, 2023). Through art, children can learn new materials and techniques, grow in self-awareness and decision-making, improve social skills and emotional regulation, and become more conscious of aesthetics (Children’s Museum Team, 2023). Young artists experiment, take risks, and make mistakes—all crucial phases in the creative process.
Then, post an activity that combines art and play outdoors.

How would you explain the importance of art to parents?
I would explain the importance of art to parents by telling them that children’s development gains significantly from art in many different ways. Children who engage in artistic activities learn math, reading, and other subjects. Additionally, it fosters social, motor, and visual development (Lynch, 2012). Children may use art as a tool for communication, which makes it enriching to use art as a means of expression. Children’s ideas, emotions, and interests may be shown in various artistic forms.
What activity could you suggest for parents to expand art and play at home?
Bubble painting is an art project I would suggest to parents to expand art and play at home. It entails blowing bubbles onto paper using a straw or bubble wand. It is an excellent method for investigating textures and colors. Bubble painting is called process art (McClelland, 2023). It focuses on the creative process rather than the end product. It encourages children to freely interact with art supplies without producing a finished product by emphasizing experimentation, discovery, and self-expression (McClelland, 2023).
Question – In what other ways can art and play be incorporated at school and home?

RE: Unit 7: Describing the Importance of Art and Play
Hello Professor and Peers
Art in the early childhood curriculum is important because it helps children develop fine motor skills, increase their creativity, and express themselves. Outdoor activities such as nature walks, painting with leaves, and creating nature art with rocks, sticks, and flowers can help children explore their environment and develop an appreciation for nature. I would encourage parents to encourage their children to explore art at home by introducing activities such as drawing, painting, and crafting. Parents can also purchase materials for children to create art with, such as paints, crayons, and clay.
