Policy Maker

Prepare a memo, addressed to the appropriate policy-making body, objectively assessing policy alternatives for a defined public sector problem. Part of determining solutions to public sector problems is understanding what is/are the most effective and efficient policy alternative(s). Providing decision makers with objectively assessed alternatives prepares them for engaging in informed deliberation. In the memo, be sure , at a minimum, to: compare and analyze policy alternatives for how and to what extent they address the problem, any immediate and long-term effects each may have, and who (i.e., stakeholders, recipients, etc.) could be affected; include both primary and secondary sources, with an emphasis on use of primary sources; include at least one research source, for each policy alternative, that includes numerical data (statistics or financial information) and briefly interpret what the numbers are saying relative to the problem and policy alternative (i.e., in support of or in contrast to). Keep in mind the tone and form of the memo and make sure the information and evidence are being communicated objectively and accurately.

In addition to fulfilling the specifics of the assignment, a successful paper must also meet the following criteria:

  • Length should be 4–6 double-spaced pages, excluding title page and reference page, using a memo header segment.
  • Utilize eight or more sources, including one source containing numerical data for each policy alternative, evaluating the credibility of these sources.
  • Include a cover page and references page in 10 – 12-point font (Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable)
  • Viewpoint and purpose should be clearly established and sustained
  • Assignment should follow the conventions of Standard English (correct grammar, punctuation, etc.)
  • Writing should be well ordered, logical and unified, as well as original and insightful
  • Your work should display superior content, organization, style, and mechanics
  • Appropriate citation style should be followed

You should also make sure to:

  • Include a title page with full name, class name, section number, and date
  • Include an introductory and concluding paragraph and demonstrate college-level communication through the composition of original materials in Standard English
  • Use examples to support your discussion
