This essay assignment asks you to bring together the elements of the course to discuss the complicated relationship between the United States and Latin America. Read Chapter 19, “Two Centuries Later,” pages 367-386 in Lars Schoultz’s Beneath the United States before you draft your response to this question.
Draw on sources from: 1) the course readings; 2) your research project; 3) the midterm essay on “serial replacement;” 4) the chapters and articles you presented to each other and critiqued; and 5) the Huntington controversy.
Essay Question:
Connect arguments read in the course by Huntington, Levitsky and Murillo, and Schoultz to explore the complex relationship between the United States and Latin America. In particular, discuss how US policies toward Latin America may have contributed to the problems inherent in “serial replacement” and how these problems contribute both to migration and the prevalence of the relatively unskilled migrant coming from Latin America, about which Huntington is most alarmed.
