The Brief
A 3000 word report is to be prepared in the style of a working manual which is related to a work-based situation demonstrating the application of an appropriate civil engineering management system for a project or operation.
The first step is to agree a context with the course tutor. This needs to be a construction or civil engineering activity which can clearly demonstrate the need for a formal systematic approach to deliver safety, quality, budget and scope.
 An essential introductory feature is a reflective analysis of the context by firstly describing the project or activity. Then, secondly, explaining the need for quality systems emphasising the benefits and possible shortcomings these quality systems. You should also compare a similar project or activity where these were successful.
 A portfolio is to be prepared which will have a section for each of the following aspects of civil engineering management:
o Section 1 Health Safety and Environmental Management
o Section 2 Quality Management System* (Technical Compliance)
o Section 3 Financial and Commercial Systems o
o Section 4 Human Resources Management
 A Conclusion that will identify a proposed document control system, indicate the overall benefits of using the manual and include a minimum of 3 suggested improvement areas for the situation
* Note that the Quality section will include the essential and important technical, project planning or operational procedures that relate to the context of the report.
