Reflective assignments ask writers to revisit an experience related to their writing process, evaluate their performance during that experience, determine what they learned through that experience, and/or describe how they will apply what they learned to other situations. An academic reflection also asks that you once again demonstrate your abilities to construct an argument.

This essay in it essence is an argument that you are making about what you have learned and how you have grown as a writer throughout the semester.

Like any argument you need a thesis, topic sentences, evidence and interpretation of your evidence, and counterarguments in order to prove your point.

While this is a first-person essay, a personal reflection, it is an academic essay. The language and content should be appropriate for an academic audience.

This essay will be 750-1000 words and the rough draft and final draft will be submitted together. Your essay will be evaluated on how well the writer conforms to the conventions of reflective writing, which are as follows:

a clear focus that explains what the writer learned through the experience
<
evidence of metacognition
<
specific examples taken from the writer’s experience (i.e. writing)

clear, specific claims about the writer’s learning
<
evidence and/or reasoning supporting the claims about learning

Students will turn in a complete rough draft where they discuss their writing process throughout the course. The reflection will focus on the student’s writing process while composing summary/ response, rhetorical analysis, and argument. Classroom exercises throughout the semester may be used a reference and incorporated into this final essay. Students will submit a complete rough draft of their paper along with a final draft that will be given a grade. Failure to submit a rough draft will result in a lower final grade on the essay.
