Purpose: Become more familiar with both psychological disorders and therapies/treatments by researching and sharing helpful treatment options for a chosen psychological disorder.
Tasks:
Review the readings for Lesson 9, and choose a specific Psychological Disorder covered in Lesson 9 to use.
After you’ve completed the readings for Lesson 10, research other sources (see below) and compare and contrast the treatment perspectives and modalities covered, while thinking about which might be most beneficial to your chosen disorder.
Use both Galileo and Google to research treatments for the disorder, and be sure to look for the following: historical perspectives, current treatment practices, and possibilities for future study and treatment. Remember to focus on scholarly and credible sources (i.e., not blogs or mass-market magazines/newspapers).
Here’s where you start writing: Using your reading and research, describe your disorder in a sentence or two, then choose the best treatment for your chosen disorder and explain the reasons why you’re recommending it, in one well-developed paragraph. Be sure to include the information you researched above.
After your explanation, list the website that was the most helpful to you in your research, and summarize why you found it so useful in one well-developed paragraph.
Follow that summary with a thoughtful critique of the value of that information. Include your assessment of the credibility of the site, its user friendliness, and any related links or organizations – these all demonstrate your understanding of the value of both the information and treatment. Your critique/evaluation should also be at least one paragraph.
Include the name of the disorder you researched and your identified treatment option in the subject line of your Discussion Post, and provide citations/references for your sources.
You may choose a disorder you think is interesting, or one you feel you may need to know more about in the future, or, if you or a loved one has experienced a psychological disorder, you may choose to research that. The main purpose of the discussion is to research and share well-supported information that is positive and useful for a specific diagnosis. You may choose to share a unique perspective or personal experience, but this is neither required nor the focus of the discussion, and your post will be graded only on your researched information, summary, and evaluation. Remember that ethical practices in the study of psychology emphasize the importance of confidentiality, so if you include information about someone else, make sure to use initials, not names. Don’t disclose anything personal if you are not comfortable doing so.
Finally, respond substantively (avoiding “I agree” or similar) to at least two other posts, including at least one that did not choose the same disorder. If your peers chose a different treatment for the same disorder, compare and contrast your rationales – would the preferred treatment vary depending on the situation? What other variables are there?
Here are some tips on how to write a good discussion post. Make sure to cite all information that isn’t common knowledge (When to cite), include a reference section that includes all sources you used and cited from, and use proper APA style. Make sure you paraphrase properly (See here and here) or quote properly. Your text is a great place to see proper APA style–and as an example, here’s how your text should be listed in your reference section:
Spielman, R. M., Jenkins, W. J., & Lovett, M. D. (2020). Psychology 2e. OpenStax. https://openstax.org/details/books/psychology-2e
and here’s how to cite it: (Spielman et al., 2020) <–add a page number for direct quote
Criteria on which you will be graded:
Your identified treatment is supported by credible research
Your well-written summary of your website's information
Your thoughtful critique/evaluation of the site
You've cited/referenced your sources correctly
Your responses to others are thoughtful, respectful, and substantive
