Overview of the Assignment: Basically, you need to write a story. Your story can be true, partially true, concocted, an embellishment, pure fabrication, an outright lie, a farce, a fable, a fantasy, a tall tale, a cautionary tale, an allegory, a dissembling; it can be a bit avant-garde or even a joke. It can be anything just so long as it is not boring. It’s that simple: Write an interesting story. There will also be an addendum. You must use the MLA bibliographic format to present a work cited entry for our Lunsford book, plus two scholarly/academic sources related to any aspect of your story. For example, if you write a story about a hurricane, you can find two sources of any kind that are about the hurricane. If your story has an animal or a car in it, you can present two source materials about that kind of animal or car. The addendum must also contain a documented quote from our Lunsford book and from one of your sources. (We will go over all of this in class.)
Basically this writing project is going to be a quickly written paper. You will need to use some of the writing processes or “steps to writing” that you have learned in this course. For example, you might generate ideas and explore your thoughts using any of the prewriting techniques covered in the course. I am particularly looking for brainstorming, mapping, doodling, freewriting or any of the other methods covered in class or the book. Save your prewriting, whether you do it by hand or on a Word document. You will need to complete some form of rough draft so be certain to save at least one early version of your paper. Label each version of the paper as rough draft or final copy. Remember, a rough draft doesn’t have to be good; it just has to be done. We’ll make it a good story later as we work through advanced revision techniques. Plus we’ll refine the ways we use FEEDQ2P in the revision process.
You might even look for ideas in any past writing you did such as journal entries or homework. Many of you will have stories related to Hurricane Ike and the evacuation for that; some of you may even have Hurricane Harvey stories. Some will have stories from long ago. One fun way to get stories is to ask your parents or grandparents how they met. Just remember, make your story interesting.
Details of the Assignment: To begin, your story needs to come in at about 600-750 words (at least two full double-spaced typed pages will be fine, or about four full handwritten pages). Your narrative must also include the following: one correctly written exchange of dialogue; one correctly used semi-colon or colon; one correct gerund or “ing” verb phrase; and one exclamation point. Each of these features should be underlined, italicized, or highlighted so I do not have to go searching or guessing.
