Option A- Interview someone with a Mental Illness
STEP 1: Select your interviewee.
This can be any family member, friend, co-worker, another student, or even a stranger, so long as they are at least 18 years of age – so they can consent to participate in the interview.
They must have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder. This can be any of the ones listed in our textbook or found in the DSM-IV, except Substance Abuse, which is excluded because of how commonly found it is. I want you to expand your learning about different disorders, and believe me there are plenty more.
STEP 2: The interview
Ask your interview the following questions:
1) What mental health disorder have you been diagnosed with?
2) What are the common symptoms you experience?
3) How do you think this disorder has affected your daily living? Include impact on school, work, or personal relationships.
4) Are you receiving any form of treatment, i.e. counseling, medication, etc.?
5) If receiving treatment, how effective has it been?
6) What do you wish others knew about you or this disorder?
STEP 3: Post our answers.
Once you have obtained the information above post your answers in the discussion forum, but include the relationship of the interviewee to you. You need not include their name to protect confidentiality.
Then add how you thought the interview went, and any insight you gained from the experience, or anything else you want us to know.
STEP 4: Student responses
Then post a comment to at least 2 other student interviews.
