Before submitting your Assessment, carefully review the rubric. Many students find that understanding the requirements of the Assessment and the rubric criteria help them direct their focus and use their time most productively.RubricClick each of the items below to complete this assessment.Part 1: Critical Appraisal of ResearchIdentify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
Develop a PICOT question to address this clinical issue of interest.
Using the keywords from the PICOT question, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles at the systematic-reviews level.
Conduct a critical appraisal of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected by completing the Critical Appraisal Worksheet.
Part 2: Evidence-Based Best PracticesBased on your appraisal, recommend a best practice that emerges from the research you reviewed. In a 1- to 2-page narrative, address the following:Explain the best practice that emerged, justifying your proposal with APA citations for the evidenced-based research that you reviewed
A search on a clinical issue, using a Problem-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome-Time (PICOT) question, might yield few or many results. Regardless of the quantity, however, literature findings must be critically appraised for reliability and relevance to a particular question.Chapter 5 of Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare: A Guide to Best Practice explores guidelines for the critical appraisal of quantitative research, including the four phases of critical appraisal, three questions to ask of all studies, and how recommendations for practice come from a body of evidence. Chapter 6 provides guidance for critically appraising qualitative studies, including the impact that qualitative evidence has on clinical decision-making, unique language and concepts that are encountered in qualitative literature, and critical appraisal criteria. The article that follows describes how a medical team critically appraises the evidence they have found to answer a clinical question. The video program discusses how to appraise research. In your Competency Assessment, you will critically appraise peer-reviewed articles and, based on your appraisal, suggest a best practice that emerges from the research.TEXTBOOK: EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE IN NURSING & HEALTHCARE: A GUIDE TO BEST PRACTICEMelnyk, B. Critically appraising literature requires skills in synthesizing information to determine similarities and differences between studies. The articles and video program that follow provide guidance in conducting a critical appraisal as well as the synthesis process. The critical appraisal of qualitative studies, which differs from that of quantitative studies, is also examined. Consider this information as you conduct a critical appraisal of peer-reviewed articles for your Competency Assessment.ARTICLE: EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE: STEP BY STEP: CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF THE EVIDENCE: PART II: DIGGING DEEPER—EXAMINING THE “KEEPER” STUDIESEvidence-Based Practice: Step by Step: Critical Appraisal of the Evidence: Part II: Digging Deeper—Examining the “Keeper” StudiesFineout-Overholt, E., Melnyk, B.
