This protest was in honor of George Floyd, an African American man who was murdered by white men, police at that. This movement that took place was a part of a large protest community, Black Lives Matter (BLM). BLM is a movement protecting the lives of black people, who have had much loss due to social injustice and racism, the BLM movement had a protest because of yet again, an act of social injustice against a black man, causing him to lose his life, many people considered this a racist act, and many people considered it as a power trip of a cop against a civilian, some both. The factors causing this tension are racism and superiority of law enforcement. I believe that when dealing with the problem solving process, the main focus needs to be addressed, develop a plan on how to fix it, implement the plan and reflect on the outcome. For this situation, I believe it would have been best for law enforcement and politicians to vocally express and apologize for the racist acts and superior aggression caused by law enforcement. I believe that there should have been immediate consequences for the police on trial, and a huge gesture should have been given to the family of George Floyd, as well as everyone involved in BLM, a recognition for black lives and their importance instead of being ignored. There should be a plan to protect all people of color against violence, racism and social injustice. This plan could include not allowing law enforcement to draw their guns unless they are being physically attacked, having all interactions between law enforcement and civilians on video footage, and holding law enforcement accountable and relieving them of their duties as soon as they have broken the law. Civilians are treated unlawfully and brutally all the time, yet law enforcement get special treatment when they’ve been socially unethical.Treating every individual equally and giving recognition that everyone is and should be treated equally could very well avoid intensifying the violence and racial injustice in society, but the more it is acted like it doesn’t exist, the more issues will arise among us. As a human service worker, when dealing with a client who has experienced racial profiling or acts racist themselves, I would ensure them that I see them no different. As their worker, and as a human myself, I would reassure my client that they are safe with me and we are no different, I would listen to their concerns and allow them to express themselves without any biased opinions. If my client still feels unsure of my assistance, I would gladly transfer them to someone they feel comfortable with, because it is my job as a human service worker to ensure the safety of my client and do whatever is best for them, even if it isn’t me who helps them.
