For this assignment, you will find someone in your field/discipline to interview. You can choose a professor, a family member, a friend, a student in an upper level class, etc.* Ask the person if you can interview him/her via Zoom, email, chat– whatever works for you. Write a profile of the individual that addresses questions about his or her writing, such as the following:
What kinds of writing do individuals in your field/workplace do?
What writing conventions (structure, grammar, format, genre) are specific to and important to your field/workplace? How did you learn those conventions?
What was your experience like learning to write in college?
What was your journey like? How did you choose your field/area of work?
What kinds of writing do you do most often in your work?
What expectations do you think faculty members should have for students who are learning to write in your field/line of work?
What suggestions or advice do you have for students in your field?
If you are able to, be sure to follow up your questions by asking for specific examples if you need more information to understand the scholar’s responses.
The requirements of the project are that you:
Write an introduction that describes your interviewee and the reason you chose that person. Explain what you hope to learn from the person.
Provide a written transcriipt of the interview. You can write the questions and answers in a Q & A format, or you can use paragraphs. It’s up to you!
Write a conclusion stating 1-2 main takeaways from the interview and/or something that surprised you.
*If you’re having trouble finding someone, please let me know. I’ll see if I can help you come up with options and/or find someone for you. Or use these questions as in me asking you what do you do. Please if you are answering the questions for yourself DO NOT say you write papers, thank you.
