Catfish (from Urban Dictionary)
A catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or
other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online
romances.
Did you hear how Dave got totally catfished last month?! The fox he thought he
was talking to turned out to be a pervy guy from San Diego!
Or
I was really falling for that gorgeous gal on Facebook, but she turned out to be aPretending to be someone you’re not, whether in an online dating relationship or otherwise, is
clearly an act of social deviance. However, “catfishing” presents a very specific and widespread
case.
For your final exam, explain 1) Why catfishing* is an act of deviance using textbook definitions
of “crime” and “deviance,” and 2) Why people engage in this behavior using two of the theories
from the book (Chapters 3-10). Lastly, speculate as to how we might prevent people from
catfishing in the future, using either one theory from the book or your own ideas. Be detailed and
thorough in your analysis. Be sure to support your argument with at least one specific example/case
from the movie, the MTV show, a personal antidote, or any case in the news.
The paper should be approximately 4 full, typed pages (double-spaced, with 12pt. font and 1-
inch margins). This is a full essay, so it should include both an introduction and conclusion. There
will be no penalty for exceeding the length requirements.
