At its core on the individual level this class asks, “Who/what are Multiracial Americans in the American Imagination?” How do others view/see persons of multiracial ancestry? How do they view/see themselves? Throughout the course, we have examined/discussed the historical & contemporary development and use of the two major tropes/narratives used to “talk about” and/or explain the multiracial subject in the U.S. Using the course readings
(historical & contemporary social analyses), class presentations, internet exercises, discussions, videos and lecture discuss the notions of “discourse” and “agency” as it relates to persons of multiracial heritage/ancestry in relationship to these tropes/narratives and their understanding of self.
(Hint: For this question you might want to think about the role of discourse (i.e. agreement reality, even if contested) and how it is that society
talks about & tells the “story” of mixed race persons versus how people of mixed race ancestry tell “stories” about themselves. This is not
an opinion editorial essay. You must make a declarative statement(s) that address the prompt and develops an academic or scholar
argument. Also, do not forget your early class writing assignments, midterm, internet assignments and various readings. E.g. Lemire, Teng,
