For this assignment, students are to analyze the effects and impacts of the reporting of a terrorist event. Choose a recent terrorist event (within the past five years), but one different from the event analyzed in Week One. Conduct research to report on how the event was understood and interpreted by the public. Focus both on reports from government sources and from media outlets. Did you observe differences in the ways the event was interpreted by different segments of the public? For example, was the event uniformly seen as “terrorism” by the public? Or were there differences in the perspective of terrorism? Discuss some of the ethical issues which surfaced in the reporting of the event. Draw conclusions about how you think terrorist event reporting can be managed effectively so that the public is well-served.
